Taroko Gorge cuts through Taiwan's Central Mountain Range with walls of marble rising three hundred metres above the Liwu River, the result of tectonic collision between the Eurasian and Philippine Sea plates over the last five million years.
The Taroko Gorge private tour from Taipei covers the 140-kilometre journey east from the capital to Hualien County, where the gorge forms the centerpiece of Taroko National Park, established in 1986 and spanning 92,000 hectares of subtropical and alpine ecosystems. The gorge itself extends nineteen kilometres inland from the coast, its white and grey marble strata folded and veined by heat and pressure deep in the earth's crust before being thrust upward and carved by water.
The Central Cross-Island Highway, completed in 1960 after four years of construction by retired soldiers and indigenous laborers, threads through the gorge in a series of tunnels and cantilevered sections, connecting the west coast to Hualien. Several of the gorge's most-visited sites line this route: the Eternal Spring Shrine perched above a waterfall, the Swallow Grotto where marble cliffs narrow to a corridor twenty metres wide, and the Tunnel of Nine Turns where the old roadbed has been converted to a pedestrian trail following the river's sharpest bends. The Zhuilu Old Road, a ledge trail cut into the cliff face at five hundred metres elevation, requires a permit and headcount limit due to rockfall risk and exposure.
Taroko's marble formed as limestone reefs in a shallow sea during the Paleozoic and Mesozoic eras, later metamorphosed under pressure into the crystalline stone visible today. The gorge's cliffs display this transformation in bands of white calcite marble, grey schist, and darker gneiss, some layers containing fossils from ancient marine organisms. Indigenous Truku people have inhabited the region for centuries, their name giving rise to the park's designation. The gorge remains seismically active, with earthquakes regularly reshaping the landscape and necessitating ongoing road maintenance and visitor safety protocols.
